- BKHM BESS Sdn Bhd signs crucial BESSA and Connection Agreements with Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB).
- Milestone secures commercial and technical framework for the 400MWh project under the MyBeST program.
- This landmark Malaysian BESS project will accelerate the country’s National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) and 2050 net-zero targets.

BKHM BESS Sdn Bhd, a consortium company formed by Blueleaf Energy and Universal Peak Sdn Bhd, has successfully executed the Battery Energy Storage System Service Agreement (BESSA) and Connection Agreement (CA) with Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB).
This major milestone establishes the formal commercial and technical frameworks required for the grid integration and implementation of the consortium’s landmark 100MW / 400MWh utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project. Developed under a Build, Own, and Operate (BOO) model, the project was awarded under the inaugural Malaysia Battery Energy Storage System (MyBeST) program by the Energy Commission (Suruhanjaya Tenaga).
The agreements were signed between Tenaga Nasional Berhad, represented by Datuk Ir. Ts. Shamsul Bin Ahmad, President and Chief Executive Officer of TNB, and BKHM BESS Sdn Bhd, represented by Datuk Ir. Raj Kumar R Gopal Pillai and Mr. Alfredo Jakub.
Securing Commercial and Technical Foundations
The two complementary agreements finalize the pathway for the project’s integration into the national grid:
- The Battery Energy Storage Service Agreement (BESSA): Establishes the principal commercial framework with the TNB Single Buyer as the off-taker. Functioning similarly to a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), it governs capacity and related services to support grid reliability. (This includes system availability, dispatch commitments, and performance obligations.)
- The Connection Agreement (CA): Defines the technical interface with TNB’s grid system operator functions. This covers interconnection compliance, protection systems, metering, SCADA integration, and operational coordination with TNB’s network.
Driving Malaysia’s Energy Transition
Together, these agreements represent a critical step forward in advancing Malaysia’s energy transition agenda and grid modernization efforts. The project is strategically designed to support grid reliability, improve system flexibility, and facilitate greater renewable energy integration, directly contributing to the objectives of Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
Beyond providing immediate grid stability, the development is set to catalyze broader positive impacts across the Malaysian energy ecosystem by:
- Strengthening operational flexibility and grid resilience.
- Supporting higher penetration of variable renewable energy sources like solar.
- Enabling future ancillary grid support services.
- Creating opportunities for local industry participation in the rapidly growing energy storage sector.
BKHM BESS Sdn Bhd remains committed to delivering this critical infrastructure safely, efficiently, and in close alignment with the nation’s sustainable energy aspirations.
